“I force myself to wake up each day and reclaim my power. I stare down my ED each morning, announcing to it, and to myself, that I will not be controlled. I will not be consumed. I will choose to stand up and fight.” - Meredith Essalat
“The night I was assaulted, I lost control over my body and my sense of self. I spent the next few years desperately trying to regain control, but the trauma and denial of the incident left me fumbling to put the pieces back together.”
- Janelle Lescure
Let’s choose to honor International Women’s Day by recognize the powerful women in our lives who make the world a better place. Let’s choose to celebrate our successes and triumphs that have given us the freedoms we experience every day. If you feel you have a complicated relationship with food - we feel you on that. These days you can’t scroll through instagram, turn on the TV, or even go outside without hearing about the newest diet fad or trendy “superfood” we must consume NOW (cue the eye roll). It’s hard out here for a well-rounded, body-positive woman!
Week #3 in our 12-week curriculum is designed to combat this harmful commentary and teach students about food and what it means to us. We encourage our girls to develop a healthy relationship with food - one that both honors their hunger, their health and their taste buds.
10 years is a long time. I feel like a totally different person than the girl I was 10 years ago. So much has happened and so much has changed. How I view the world has evolved from what it was 10 years ago—along with my goals, priorities, opinions, fears, and dreams. Ten years holds a lot of missed experiences. Ten years is a long time to be gone.

“For that 6th grade version of myself, so nervous about all of the unknowns ahead: I wish she could even begin to imagine what my life looks like today. And I would tell her: Thank you.” - Katie Dalton
“Looking back, I wish I could tell my younger self that her self-worth and confidence is more than being "skinny" and that there are healthier ways to overcome mental pain. It's about being strong, feeling well, and feeling comfortable in your own body, which is what I eventually found through exercise. It's about living your passions and being proud of your accomplishments.”

“These are the reasons why I am a part of the Movemeant Foundation,” Sophia stated. “I’m doing it for that young girl who was so afraid of not being good enough. I’m doing it for me.”
With empowerment through movement and education at the forefront of our strategy, Movemeant Foundation facilitates a body-positive curriculum for middle school girls. Week #2 in our 12-week curriculum is dedicated to teaching students about genetics and body diversity. Our 45-minute session revolves around how genetics play a huge role in our body size. We also explain how internal and external stimuli may change our bodies through time. With this knowledge, we hope to encourage our youth to accept their bodies as they are, freeing them to move with joy.
“I tried for so long to dim my light to make others comfortable and now I want to show girls that by becoming invisible we give away our power. By speaking up and showing up, especially when it’s uncomfortable or scary, we are instilling in ourselves that we have value to add, while empowering others to do the same. “

Through this campaign, we are spreading a message that the physical and emotional inner-confidence that we gain from movement, sports, and the communities we build around fitness-related activities, is directly reflected in our everyday life, both personally and professionally.
