About Learning Works Charter High School at Homeboy Industries:

The mission of Learning Works Charter School is to provide a personalized, rigorous academic program and relevant life skills to traditionally underserved students in grades 7-12 who have withdrawn or are in danger of withdrawing from mainstream education without attaining a high school diploma. The youth we serve would inaccurately be called “at-risk.” They are, in fact, “in crisis” or have already demonstrated a behavior or condition that exceeds at-risk, such as becoming pregnant, dropping out of school or entering the juvenile delinquency system.

The Movemeant Grant:

Funds from the Movemeant grant will support an immersive retreat for young women attending Learning Works Charter High School. This multi-day retreat will focus on connecting young women with their bodies, nature, and their children through expressive movement, hiking, dance, yoga, and other forms of exercise and expression. This leads them to a better understanding of their bodies and body image; while simultaneously providing them with skills in self-reliance and resiliency.

Why is this grant important?

With the emerging research on trauma and its impact on the body, this provides a distinct opportunity for us to work with our students outside of the school environment to use physical movement as a means of healing the profound physical, sexual, and emotional violence that our young women have experienced and to help them think about creating a healthy environment for their own children.
