The Movemeant Grant:
The San Francisco Unified Public School District (SFUSD) has received a grant for which middle schools in impoverished neighborhoods across the city will be able to implement dance curriculum into their existing physical education programs. The goal is to better engage students who are failing to show up to school or are failing out of physical education because they are not motivated or too embarrassed to change into their gym clothes. Aptos Middle School is the pilot program for SFUSD.
Why is this grant important?
Sedentary lifestyles have become a systemic problem throughout the United States. Providing the opportunity for girls to reframe physical education by offering up activities that they enjoy is a small step in the right direction. In this case, dance is a bridge to getting young women active and adopting a healthier lifestyle and greater self-confidence.
